Our little man Tank has always had a zest for life, especially if it involves his balls... You know, the kind you throw and play fetch with? He flings him self off of high altitudes such as our bed, deck, top of couch, etc... To then proceed furiously towards his goal, the ball. Nothing else in that moment matters, so much in fact that the pain of an injury plays no role in slowing him down. This brings me to my main point, that although we named him Tank, defined as an "armored combat vehicle", he in fact is not indestructible... On multiple occasions he has come back with a great sense of satisfaction carrying his ball in his mouth only to then be limping... On said previous occasions no real serious damage took place, nothing a little rest and NSAID's couldn't take care of... That was up until two weeks ago...
Same scenario played out, I throw ball, Tank tornados his way towards the ball, retrieves with previously mentioned enthusiasm only to come back limping. My first thought after evaluating him was that he done gone and brokedid his toe! We took the trek into my work, snapped some x-rays and wouldn't you believe it... I was right, he broke his toe. Now let me tell you how unfortunate this is... A broken toe on a 2 year old terrier can arguably be the worst thing to break as the healing process is quite long (at least 8 weeks), strict rest has to be enforced (no running, jumping or playing), keeping the splinted leg clean and dry.. Aka momma has to cover up his leg every time he needs to go out and potty, no more doggie door access, changing the splint every week, etc... Phew! You try telling a 2 year old terrier that he can't run jump or play and see what happens... It's rough!
After 4 weeks of being in a splint we will then take another set of x-rays to see if the bone is heeling on it's own, if it isn't then surgery is required... Ugh! The conclusion of this story is that, although tank has undying love for his balls... They will no longer be present in our household, sorry Tankmeister, breaking up is hard to do but truthfully it was quite the unhealthy relationship...
